ProductionScroll #015

Deployments should be boring. Incidents provide enough excitement.

Automation, small batches, and clear signals turn release into routine.

Interpretation

Exciting deployments usually hide uncertainty: too many changes, manual steps, unclear ownership, or missing recovery. Boredom is an engineered outcome. Build a repeatable path, reduce batch size, expose progress, and reserve human attention for interpreting signals instead of typing ritual commands.

Practice

  • Automate the same release path in every environment.
  • Prefer frequent, small changes.
  • Make progress and failure states visible.

Anti-pattern

A deployment checklist that depends on one person remembering twelve commands.
